Ecclesiastical Tenures: Speech of James O. Putnam, of Buffalo, on the Bill, Providing for the Vesting of the Title of Church Property in Lay Trustees, Delivered in the Senate of New York, January 30, 1855

Albany, NY: Van Benthuysen, Printer, 1855. Paperback. 40 p.; 23 cm. Plain wrapper with black wrapper title. Red circular Senate stamp of the author on front wrapper. James O. Putnam (1818-1903), a member of the nativist National American Party, had introduced into the New York Senate a bill favored by nativists, who sought to weaken the power of the Catholic Church in the United States. In this speech he argues for the adoption of the bill. Although An Act in Relation to Conveyances and Devices of Personal and Real Estate for Religious Purposes was enacted in April 1855, it was apparently not enforced. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is dusty; loss at ends of spine; one vertical creased throughout; pages are clean and tight. Very Good. Item #008476
