In the late 19th century, Quakers Sallie Sharpless and Lydia Hall saw a need for housing in West Chester, Pa., for older single women who had no families to support them. Their efforts in 1891 resulted in the first Friends’ boarding home in West Chester, which provided room, board, and care for older individuals. This publication, issued on the 100th anniversary, contains a history of the Hickman by John M. Moore, along with the names of the women from Concord Quarterly Meeting who worked to establish the Hickman; boards of managers and officers; and a record of residents for the first 100 years.
