Return to Life by Lily MacLeod [provenance: Dr. Guy Lacy Schless]

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1951. Hardcover. 128 p.; 21 cm. Green cloth with yellow spine title. Dust jacket. Publisher's advertisements on back flap and back section of dust jacket. The author, Lily MacLeod Glendinning (1907-1951), was a literary critic on the staff of the Ladies Home Journal. She wrote this account of her battle with cervical cancer, hoping to provide comfort and guidance to other women struggling with cancer. She referred to her doctor as "Dr. S.," presumably referring to Dr. Guy Lacy Schless (1929-2011), the former owner whose name is on the front free endpaper. Dr. Schless was at Pennsylvania Hospital for 55 years. On the reverse of the front free endpaper is written "By Lily MacLeod Glendinning." Attached to the half title page is a small note: "To our dear Guy -- whom we couldn't do without! Lily & Bets." The author's daughter was Elizabeth Carpenter Glendinning, known as Betsy or Bets. On the reverse of that, facing the title page, a photograph of a woman is attached, presumably the author. A review of this book appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on March 11, 1951. Sadly, the author's obituary had appeared the day previously in that newspaper. The cause of death is not given. An unusual provenance. Book is in Very Good- Condition: old discoloration on front free endpaper; shadows on title page from tape holding photograph to facing page; otherwise, clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Good Condition: edges are rubbed; old application of tape to edges as a preservative measure; clean and bright. Very Good - / good. Item #008849
