Blue cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles; black-stamped illustrations of two horse heads on front cover. Green floral endpapers. Front fixed endpaper and title page stamped: "Public Property, Q. M. Dep't." William H. Carter (1851-1925) wrote this guide to horses for the cavalry while he was assistant instructor for the Cavalry at Fort Leavenworth from Sept. 1893 to June 1895. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1902 and that year submitted a scheme for establishing a training school for farriers and blacksmiths. He was promoted to major general in 1915 and retired in 1918. This is the very scarce first edition. In Fair+ Condition: edges rubbed; minor loss at ends of spine; cloth separating along joints from ends of spine with 1-cm. tear; old repair along both hinges; title page detached but present, with chipping along fore-edge; front hinge very weak, back hinge starting; pencil notation in upper margin of first page of Preface; 4 pencil checkmarks in margins of Contents pages; otherwise, clean and solid.
