Sketch of John Hampden Pleasants and His Times

New York: American Review, 1847. Pamphlet. [10] p., tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait; 24 cm. Plain grey wrapper. From The American Review: A Whig Journal, March 1847, pages 285-294. American journalist John Hampden Pleasants (1797-1846) founded the Richmond Whig newspaper in Richmond, Va. While he supported the emancipation of slaves, he objected to being called an abolitionist and coward by a rival newspaper editor. This led to a duel in which Pleasants died. The anonymous author provides an interesting account of Pleasants' life while refusing to express an opinion about the disagreement that led to the duel. In Very Good Condition: front wrapper is ink-spattered; wrapper starting to separate at tail; minor chipped at wrapper edges; light upper corner creasing; plate and pages are clean and solid. Very Good. Item #008938
