Ingersoll (1833-1899) was involved in a debate on religion with several other authors published in the North American Review. Eventually British statesman William Gladstone (1809-1898) replied to Ingersoll and then Ingersoll replied to Gladstone. Here the Freethought Publishing Co. publishes Ingersoll's response.
