Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between raised bands; leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Laws of Pennsylvania. Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Passed at a Session, which was Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia [on 5 Dec. 1797] (Philadelphia: Hall and Sellers, 1798); Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Passed at a Session, which was Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia [on 6 Dec. 1796] (Philadelphia: Hall and Sellers, 1797); Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Passed at a Session, which was Begun and Held at the Borough of Lancaster [on 3 Dec. 1799] (Lancaster: Francis & Robert Bailey, 1800); and Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Passed at a Session, which was Begun and Held at the Borough of Lancaster [on 5 Nov. 1800] (Lancaster: Francis Bailey, 1801) have separate title pages but continuous pagination. Former owner's name "J. B. Smith" on all but one title page. Occasional discrete corrections and additions in ink throughout, presumably by Smith. Jonathan Bayard Smith (1742–1812), Philadelphia merchant and member of the Continental Congress in 1777–1778, was prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas for the city and county of Philadelphia from 1777 to 1788 and a justice of that court from 1778 to 1788. Beginning with 1792 he served two years as alderman of Philadelphia and in the latter year was auditor general of Pennsylvania under Gov. Thomas Mifflin. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed with loss at ends of spine and corners; joints are cracked; old dampstain in lower part of pages 189-240; occasional foxing, heavier on a few pages; occasional ink notations; otherwise, clean and solid.
