London: Eglington & Co., 1892. 1 leaf (4 x 15 cm.) from The Theatre, Oct. 1892, with a carbon print photograph of Lawrence Irving (12 x 9 cm.) attached [Laurence Irving]. The photographer was Alfred Ellis (1854-1930), a British photographer who specialized in theatrical photography. The subject, Laurence Irving (1871-1914), was the son of Sir Henry Irving. After spending 3 years in Russia preparing to serve in the foreign service, in 1891 he decided to pursue a career in the theater. In addition to acting, he had success as a manager and a dramatist before dying in May 1914 when he and his wife drowned after the ship they were on, the RMS Empress of Ireland, was rammed by another ship and sank.
