Statement of William H. Purnell, Postmaster of Baltimore

Baltimore: William H. Purnell, 1866. Pamphlet. 7 p.; 23 cm. In March 1866 William H. Purnell (1826-1902), who had been appointed postmaster of Baltimore by President Lincoln in 1861, was up for confirmation to a post, possibly assessor of internal revenue for Baltimore. The only objection to him was a charge that he had made a speech at a Democratic and Conservative meeting in Oct. 1865. He offered this reply, explaining how he happened to be present when a speaker denounced President Johnson for his actions toward the southern states after the Civil War ended and consequently intervened to prevent violence. He also offered a statement covering his vigorous support for the Union during the war. Scarce. In Good Condition: soiled and creased; closed 1-cm. tear from fore-edges; solid. Good. Item #009281
