Justice of the Peace Commission for Abiram Johnson signed by Gov. Ethan Allen Brown of Ohio 1819

S.l. s.n., 1819. Printed and handwritten document (18 x 32 cm.). Gov. Ethan Allen Brown commissions Abiram Johnson as a justice of the peace of Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio, for three years on June 30, 1819. Signed on the front by Ethan Allen Brown and the secretary of state, Jeremiah McLene (1767-1837), and on the back by Justice of the Peace William Wyckoff. On the back is also the resignation of Abiram Johnson (1792-1866) from the office of justice of the peace on Aug. 4, 1821, signed by him. Ethan Allen Brown (1776-1852) studied law under Alexander Hamilton, sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, and served as Ohio governor from 1818 to 1822 and then represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 1822 to 1825. Jeremiah McLene (1767-1837) served as Ohio Secretary of State from 1808 to 1831 and represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1833 to 1837. He was born in Pennsylvania and is credited with having risen to the rank of major general of militia during the American Revolution. In Very Good+ Condition: lightly foxed and creased. Very Good +.
