Bagnall (1883-1943) was a minister in several African Methodist Episcopal churches before becoming rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Philadelphia; he served as dean of the School of Religious Education for Colored People from 1921 to 1933 and was a leader of the NAACP. He was also an author and published short stories including Lex Talionis, now considered an early work of Afrofuturism.
