First published in 1849 as The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada. Josiah Henson (1789-1883) is said to have inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Escaping enslavement, Henson, his wife, and children made it to Canada in 1830, where they joined a community of other formerly enslaved people in what is now Ontario. Scarce.
