Stone (1822-1895) was an attorney; led the 48th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1867, 1877, 1878, and 1880; and served in Congress from 1881 to 1887. In this address he discusses the history of the law in Massachusetts, in particular focusing on Massachusetts attorneys Rufus Choate (1799-1859), Caleb Cushing (1800-1879), and Robert Rantoul, Jr., (1805-1852).
