Clark's Spool Cotton [racist trade card]
New York: Clark Thread Co., 1885. 1 card (11.7 x 7.9 cm.) with chromolithographed illustration on the front of a Black man sitting on a very large spool of thread. He is next to a stream and is using Clark's Spool Cotton on his fishing pole. The caption reads: "I reckon dis yere's strong 'nuff suah." The back contains an advertisement for Clark's O.N.T. Spool Cotton. The seller's information is stamped over this: "A. Sharpe & Co. Dry and Fancy Goods, 213 Essex St., Lawrence, Mass." George A. Clark established an American branch of his Scottish business in New York for the exclusive distribution of cotton thread in 1855. In the 1880s the company developed a six-cord thread called Our New Thread, or O.N.T. In Very Good Condition: 1-x-2-cm. area scraped at head of back of card; back is slightly discolored; front is clean and bright. Very Good. Item #010346
