John Pope in August 1862; and the first appearance of: chapters 1-32 of George Eliot's novel Romola; chapters 39-42 of William Thackeray's final novel, The Adventures of Philip on his Way through the World, and his Roundabout Papers nos. 23-26; and chapters 1-12 of Anthony Trollope's novel The Small House at Allington.
