Former owner Gordon Heath's name written in black on front fixed endpaper over drawing in red of a mandolin. On the back fixed endpaper, in the same hand in black: "Gordon Heath November 1956 Paris." American actor Gordon Heath (1918-1991) came to prominence in 1945 in Elia Kazan's play Deep are the Roots, about the return of a black GI after WWII to the Jim Crow South. In 1948 he moved to Paris and continued on the stage in Paris and London. With his life-partner, Leroy Payant, he also operated the Cafe de L'Abbaye in Paris from 1949 until Payant's death in 1976.
