American Voices: The People Ask for Peace!

Philadelphia: Whittier Press, 1953. Pamphlet. 7, [1] p.; 20 cm. Pamphlet; stapled. The second separate printing of this poem, which first appeared in an issue of Masses & Mainstream. The back notes the author's arrest under the Smith Act shortly after the first printing, and that the proceeds from autographed copies would go to his legal expenses. The poem criticized America's entry into the Korean conflict and marked his return to poetry after nearly 20 years. Although he was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government in 1954, this was overturned on appeal due to lack of evidence. In Near Fine Condition: staples are just starting to oxidize; otherwise, clean and bright. Near Fine. Item #011408
