Lot of 6 black-and-white photographs of country-western musicians of the 1940s in southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware
1940. 1) 16 x 12 cm. on card of Hank Lawson and his band, known variously as the Knights of the Road and his "Bums," identified here as Lazy Hank Lawson with Barney, Weary (Ray Ludwig), Happy, Sparkey (Stanley Kindlick), and Gloomy. 2) 16 x 19 cm. of a group standing around a microphone, identified by hand on the back as Slim and the Gloom Chasers with the Darling Sisters and Betty. 3) 20 x 25 cm. captioned "Cousin Lee, Sarah Lee, & the Boys"; identified on the photo as Frankie, Steve, Johnny Jr., Rawhide, Pine Ridge Boy, Jimmie, and Johnnie; the microphones say WDEL NBC. 4) 20 x 25 cm. of the Sleepy Hollow Ranch Gang standing on a stage around a microphone with a WCAU banner above them; stamped on the back: Sleepy Hollow Fan Club; the band is identifiedhere as Elmer Newman, Julie Murray, Slim West, Sophie Murray, Pee Wee Miller, Pancake Pete Newman and two more; Elmer and Pete Newman and Julie and Sophie Murray established the Sleepy Hollow Ranch near Quakertown, Pa., in 1940 where many country western musicians performed. 5) 18 x 25 cm. of Uncle Jack and Mary Lou Nelson and band; names are written in ink along the edges identifying Uncle Jack, Paul on guitar, Squeezy on Accordion, Shorty on fiddle, Red on upright bass; the woman on guitar in the center is not named but is presumably Mary Lou; this was a country western band from Reading, Pa. 6) 21 x 25 cm. of an outdoor audience with superimposed head shots of 5 men and a circled "J"; names are written in ink along the edges identifying Curly Herdman, Merv Shriver, Doc, Ray, and Nevada Les; this was probably the Circle J Ranch near Quakertown, Pa., which hosted country western music in the 1940s. In Very Good Condition: light creasing of a few corners; clean and solid. Very Good. Item #011450
