Former owner's name in ink at head of title page: J. H. Wolcott. George Evans (1797-1867) served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1826 to 1830; he representated Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1829 to 1841 and in the U.S. Senate from 1841 to 1847. Former owner J. H. Wolcott was probably Joshua Huntington Wolcott (1804-1891), a Boston merchant and director of many mills, including the York Manufacturing Company of Saco, Maine. The fight over the appropriations bill at issue here involved former President John Quincy Adams, then representing Massachusetts in the House of Representatives, and Churchill Caldom Cambreleng, representing New York.
