Autograph Book of Lili Mestern in German with Hand-Drawn Illustrations
1918. Hardcover. Approx. 75 leaves; 17 cm. Maroon faux-leather cloth binding. Gilt-stamped initials on front cover: "L. M." All page edges red. Decorated endpapers. Small bookseller's label on inside of front free endpaper: Emil Barnbrock, Papierhandlung, Hamburg. Internal evidence indicates that this belonged to Lili Mestern (Anna Caroline Mestern (1904-1919)). Contains 27 autographs in German (some in German script), of which 7 also have very attractive illustrations: several of flowers, and others consisting of a scene of trees and mountains, an ink sketch of a rural scene, and a scene of people in strange red outfits playing in the woods. The inscriptions are dated from March 1918 to March 1919, from Lili's relatives and friends, primarily in Hamburg. The relatives are her mother, Joanna Margaretha Sieveking Mestern (1877-1940); aunts Agathe, Käthe Bitter (Anna Katharina Wilhelmine Bitter (1873-1956)), Käthe Sieveking (Catharina Roosen Sieveking (1877-1942), Lulu, Magdelana Mestern (Magdalene Elisabeth von Bergen Mestern (1888-1970)), Helene (ink rural scene) (Helene Henriette Sieveking (1861-1935)), and Inge Busse (painting of people in red outfits); grandmother Anna Elisabeth Baasch Mestern (1850-1942); great aunt Agathe Henriette Söhle von Kaweczynski (1838-1921); brother Paul Mestern (1905-1998); cousins Friedrich Sieveking, Wilhelm Sieveking, Tilly Sieveking, Lisi Lappenberg, Margarethe Lappenberg (flower drawing), Heinz Lappenberg, and Olga Sieveking; and friends including Edith von Gibara (flower drawing), teacher Lizzie Schulke, Leonor Sommer (tree drawing), Liselotte Asten, Agethe Geimichen (flower drawing), and Marie Beschutz.
