Written on the front fixed endpaper of notebook 2: "Gretchen Sieveking Samarkand Mai 98." Joanna Margaretha (Gretchen) Sieveking travelled with her father, Caspar Wilhelm Sieveking (1834-1917), and brothers Fritz (Friedrich Christian Sieveking (1867–1917)) and Wilhelm (1873-1958), to Samarkand in 1898. The journal begins in Danzig on April 2, 1898; they travelled to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Pyatigorsk, Vladikavkaz, Mlety, Tiflis [Tbilisi], Krasnovodsk, Samarkand, Bukhara, Merv, Krasnovodsk, Baku, Borshom [Borjomi], Kutaisi, and Odessa, and returned to Hamburg on June 10 via Budapest. A few flowers remain pressed between pages. Joanna Margaretha Sieveking (1877-1940) married Jean Paul Mestern (1871-1905) in 1902. This is a fascinating account of travel in eastern Europe in the late 19th century. Entirely in German script. In Very Good Condition: edges rubbed; cocked; clean and solid. Very Good. Item #011605
