2 Color Postcards Featuring the 1927 Friendship Doll representing Tokyo

Tokyo: Kikaha Postal Mail, 1927. 2 color postcards published by Kikaha Postal Mail, which was active in the early 20th century. With the original commemorative envelope with an inscription in Japanese reading in part: Tokyo City Doll Farewell Party. Misao Yamagata gave them to Julia A. Shourek, with a brief inscription on the back of one card. Julia Amy Shourek (1883-1972), an American educator, ornithologist, and botanical collector, visited Japan in 1920. Misao Yamagata, a Japanese educator, came to the United States in the 1920s to learn about American education methods. The doll and accessories shown in the postcards was one of the Japanese Friendship Dolls, a diplomatic project involving the exchange of dolls between the United States and Japan in 1927. Original postcards of the Friendship Dolls are very scarce. In Very Good Condition: corners are slightly rubbed; clean and bright. Envelope is in Good Condition: chipping along 2 edges; minor loss along one edge; clean and solid. Very Good. Item #011975
