1795 Deed for sale of lot on 2nd St. in the Northern Liberties (Philadelphia) by Mary Mentzer Jones to John Nicholas Wagner
1795. 1 handwritten parchment document (14 x 22 inches). On 31 Aug 1795 Amos Jones and his wife Mary Mentzer Jones (widow of Engelbart Mentzer, innholder) sold to John Nicholas Wagner of the Northern Liberties, tanner, a lot on 2nd St. in the Northern Liberties. Engelbart Mentzer had died intestate and in possession of the lot, leaving Mary, his widow, and 3 minor children. The Orphans Court ordered that the lot be sold to pay his debts and support the children. John Nicholas Wagner bought it at auction for 290 pounds. Signed by Amos Jones; Mary Jones signed only with her mark. Signed by witnesses Richard Whitehead and Robert Bourne, and the Orphans Court clerk, Joseph Hopkinson. Also signed in 1817 by Robert Whitehead, who testified to the signatures of Richard Whitehead and Robert Bourne. Not recorded in the Philadelphia deedbook until 1846, when the recorder Andrew Miller signed the deed. In Very Good Condition: minor loss in center where folds cross; otherwise, clean and crisp.
